From wearable gadgets to ‘smart fabrics’ to 3D printing, the future of fashion is very much tied to new technology trends. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise, should it? Technology is all around us. We’ve come to depend on technology from the moment we wake up each day, until we go back to sleep, and even while sleeping. It drives the way we live and it touches upon everything we see, say, dress, etc.
“I freed the body”
…Coco Chanel once said. And she did. She revolutionized the way women dress, but not because she had an epiphany or something of the sorts, but because times had changed. Women were seeking more empowerment, were becoming more active, and so they needed more freedom to express themselves. And Coco showed them that freedom started with the way they dressed.
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only,” she also said. “Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”
And what is happening right now is technology
…that helps solve medical issues, technology that saves time and effort, technology that makes our lives simpler. Check out this clip, courtesy of the Creators Project, to see just how wearable gadgets will dominate our daily lives:
Recognizing the inevitable trend, fashion designers have already picked it up and integrated it into their runway shows. Remember Alexander Wang’s heat-sensitive garments at the Fall/Winter 2014 NY fashion week? But how exactly will this trend translate into common use and appeal to the masses? Most likely through celebrities who seek new creative ways to express themselves, like Lady Gaga.
The future of fashion has started!
